Most thawing quotes go wrong in the specification, not the price. Below is the checklist we use when a lab asks us to recommend a model — written so you can hand it straight to your procurement or QA team.
1. Which containers do you thaw?
This single question splits the range in two.
| Container | Models that fit |
|---|---|
| 1.5–2.0 ml cryotubes | ThawHome Tube (slot A), ThawLINE, ThawLINE Pro, MobiThaw |
| 4.0–5.0 ml tubes | ThawHome Tube (slot B), ThawLINE, ThawLINE Pro |
| 50 ml cryobags | ThawHome Bag (slot C), ThawWaker |
| Vials / bottles | ThawLINE with custom ports |
Custom ports exist for vials and bottles, but they change lead time — ask before you commit to a delivery date.
2. How many samples per day, and do they need to run in parallel?
Four independent channels let you thaw four different samples at once, each with its own timer. A shared-timer unit is cheaper but serialises your work.
3. Do you need a record of each run?
Three levels of answer:
- No record needed — ThawHome or MobiThaw: switch on, insert, go. No account system to administer.
- Basic record — ThawLINE: two-level accounts, SD-card data, PC export of an unmodifiable temperature curve.
- Audit-ready record — ThawLINE Pro / ThawWaker: three-level accounts with password expiry, stored run protocols, and a printed thaw report per sample.
4. Who is allowed to change settings?
If a shared facility has students rotating through, an account system is not a formality. On ThawLINE Pro the administrator creates accounts but does not run samples; supervisors own protocols; operators enter sample numbers only. Wrong-password lockouts and account recovery are built in.
5. What is your temperature discipline?
Check three numbers in any datasheet: the thaw window, the protection temperature range, and whether the instrument refuses to start when the sample is above the limit. Kemesser devices allow a protection temperature between -40 °C and 0 °C and block a run that would heat an already-thawing sample.
6. Validation and calibration
Ask whether the unit supports temperature calibration against a reference instrument, and how often. Our manuals recommend verification every three months on freezing containers and provide a calibration routine on the thawing units.
7. Utilities and space
Power draw ranges from 60 W (MobiThaw, battery) to 300 W (ThawLINE Pro, ThawWaker). Mains adapters are 12 V/15 A with US, UK or EU plugs. Bench footprint matters in a cabinet: ThawLINE is 323 × 288 × 168 mm, ThawWaker is 400 × 445 × 255 mm.
8. Cleaning compatibility
Check the manual, not the brochure. Our documents differ between language editions on whether the outer surface is wiped with water or 70 % alcohol — ask us for the edition you will receive, and confirm it matches your cleanroom SOP.
9. Warranty and spares
Standard warranty is 12 months, extendable. Ask specifically about spare freeze cores, heating slots, printer modules and the local repair route. A unit that cannot be repaired locally becomes a spare-parts purchase.
10. Freight, customs and documentation
For an instrument with a lithium battery (MobiThaw) you need UN38.3 documentation and correct packing declarations. Confirm:
- Incoterms (EXW, FOB, CIF) and destination port
- CE declaration of conformity for EU customs
- Packing list with gross/net weight and dimensions
- Battery transport documents, if applicable
Send us this instead of a vague enquiry
"We thaw 40 × 2 ml tubes per day and 6 × 50 ml bags per week. We need three-level permissions and printed records. Destination: Rotterdam. Please quote ThawLINE Pro and ThawWaker with spare parts, plus a demo unit option."
That paragraph gets a complete, comparable answer in one exchange — including lead time and the manual edition you will receive.
